Product Description

Biogas membrane purification

Biogas contains carbon dioxide in the range of 35-45 vol%. Upgrading biogas to biomethane is primarily based on carbon dioxide removal. Biomethane is essentially purified biogas that contains at least 95 vol% methane and it can be either used as fuel for vehicles running on compressed natural gas (CNG) or injected into the natural gas grid.

Biogas upgrading using membrane technology uses the fact that gases have different permeability through a membrane fiber. During separation of carbon dioxide and methane in biogas upgrading, polymeric hollow fiber membranes are used. The membrane fibers on the market are continuously improved to gain better selectivity and higher permeability to achieve better separation and lower methane slip. Also, to increase the methane concentration in the product gas, several membrane stages are usually used in sequence. To acquire lower methane slip, a third membrane stage may be added in the permeate.

Nowadays, various techniques are used for CO2 removal from biogas. Among the most commonly used technologies are adsorption, absorption, cryogenic separation, and membrane separation. Membrane separations are particularly appealing for biogas upgrading due to their lower energy consumption, good selectivity, easily engineered modules, and therefore lower costs. High CH4 recovery efficiency can be reached (>95%), while pure CO2 can be obtained. This technology for biogas upgrading is based on gas dissolution and diffusion into polymer materials (membranes). When a differential pressure is applied on opposing sides of a polymer lm, gas transport across the lm (permeation) occurs. The gas rate of permeation is controlled by the solubility coefficient and diffusion coefficient of the gas-membrane system.
